Sustainable investing

What is sustainable investing?

Sustainable investing is about investing in progress, and recognizing that the companies solving the world’s biggest challenges are the ones that are best positioned to grow. It is about pioneering better ways of doing business, and creating the momentum to encourage more and more people to opt in to the future we’re working to create.

Through the combination of traditional investment approaches with environmental, social and governance (ESG) insights, investors ranging from global institutions to individuals are taking a sustainable approach to pursuing their investment goals.

Capital at Risk: The value of investments and the income from them can fall as well as rise and are not guaranteed. You may not get back the amount originally invested.

BlackRock is trusted to manage more money than any other investment manager in the world. That brings a lot of responsibility with it, to our clients but also to the rest of the world. We take this responsibility seriously, to help our investors make long term, positive impact. How do we do that?

We express our commitment in three key ways: through our products, through our investment processes and through our investment stewardship.

In 2015, we launched BlackRock Impact, our global sustainable investment platform, to help investors achieve their social and environmental objectives alongside targeted financial goals.

We have built off the breadth of the firm to offer a range of dedicated sustainable investment solutions across investment styles, regions and asset classes for both institutional and retail investors.

We have embarked on a multi-year process to  integrate ESG – environmental, social and governance – metrics into  Aladdin, our firm-wide portfolio risk management system.  This allows  our global investment teams to simultaneously evaluate ESG  metrics alongside traditional financial factors, enhancing our  investment process, and helping us glean new insights into long term  drivers of return.

As a fiduciary to our clients, we have responsibility to engage with companies on factors relevant to sustainable investment performance.  Each year, our investment stewardship team talks to over a 1500 companies on environmental, social and governance issues, helping us make informed voting decisions to guard long term shareholder value.

As the largest asset manager in the world, we have the strength to help our investors achieve positive change at scale, and the responsibility to start now for our next generation of investors.
